Alveolar corticotomies in orthodontics: Indications and effects on tooth movement

چکیده
Introduction: The systematic search for increased efficiency in orthodontic treatment is shared by several areas of orthodontics. Performing alveolar corticotomies shortly before the application of orthodontic forces has been suggested as a method to enhance tooth movement and, consequently, orthodontic treatment as a whole. Objective: This article reviews the historical perspective of this therapeutic approach, presents and illustrates with clinical cases its main indications and finally discusses the biological reasons underlying its use. Acceleration of orthodontic tooth movement by alveolar corticotomy in the dog.
INTRODUCTION Tooth movement and alveolar bone reaction after corticotomies have not been thoroughly examined. In this study, the effects of corticotomies on orthodontic tooth movement and alveolar bone reaction were investigated in dogs. METHODS Corticotomies were performed on the cortical bone of the mandibular left third premolar region in 12 male adult beagles. The third premolars on the l...

One of the biggest challenges an orthodontic patient faces is the time spent wearing brackets. Over the years, several surgical techniques have been developed to address this issue and reduce the overall treatment time. These combine bone-healing mechanisms with orthodontic loads to accelerate tooth movement. Although effective, these techniques are also quite invasive in nature, requiring the ...

The aim of this split-mouth experimental study was to determine (1) whether corticotomy procedures increase tooth movement and (2) the effects of a second corticotomy procedure after 4 weeks on the rate of tooth movement. The mandibular third and maxillary second premolars of five skeletally mature male foxhounds, approximately 2 years of age, were extracted. One randomly selected mandibular qu...
متن کاملSurgically facilitated orthodontic therapy: a new tool for optimal interdisciplinary results.
Restorative-driven interdisciplinary therapy frequently requires orthodontic therapy to optimally address the underlying dentofacial problems. Limitations in traditional orthodontic techniques and the length of requisite treatment times often create barriers to providers and patients' willingness to accept orthodontics as part of the overall treatment plan. Two main types of surgically facilita...
متن کاملAccelerating Tooth Movement: What Options We Have?
Duration of treatment is one of the main concerns of patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. Fixed orthodontic treatment lasts up to 2 to 3 years increasing the risk of external root resorption, periodontal problems and patient compliance [1]. Clinicians are constantly striving towards developing strategies to enhance the rate of orthodontic tooth movement. An increase in in-depth knowledge ...
